Building induced wind effects at Hong Kong International Airport

Airports are normally accompanied by an infrastructure of terminals, hangars, and other facilities (like catering facilities, fire stations etc). Apart from man-made buildings and objects there could also be geographical features like smaller and larger hills, both nearby and in the distance. Hong Kong International Airport is no exception to this rule. The airport is, however, built on reclaimed land north of the 934 m high Lantau Island. The airport itself is surrounded on three sides by open waters of the Pearl River Delta. Winds from the north(west) are relatively undisturbed and encounter large terminals and hangars on the island and these buildings interact with the incoming wind. What happens to taking-off and landing aircraft will be explained, and a few examples of projects at HKIA will be discussed. It will be shown that buildings, as far away as 2 km, can influence airport operations.
