Meteorology studies at the University of Hannover

  • Personal care ratio
    The student-teacher ratio in the Bachelor / Master degree in meteorology is very good. The courses usually do not suffer on overcrowded lecture halls, a personal contact between students and teachers is maintained and small learning groups are taken into consideration.

  • Good equipment in teaching and research
    A modern IT infrastructure, two measuring fields, a variety of measuring-instruments and systems, as well as access to professional forecast products and measuring data as well as their extensive visualization capabilities via NinJo workstations (developed by National Meteorological Services) allow practical training.

  • Internationality
    At the Institute the network research is international. Students are offered often the possibility of studying abroad as part of research activities, i.e. during the master thesis or doctoral studies. Furthermore, there are many opportunities for an internship or semester abroad in the bachelor or master studies. Here, for example, are South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Norway, France and Colorado on the list of recently chosen destinations.

    Besides the basics of meteorology, such as the weather analysis and forecasting, are courses offered according to the research profile, in the fields of radiation and remote sensing, numerical simulation of atmospheric flows, and environmental meteorology and climatology main meteorological training at the Leibniz Universität Hannover.

The meteorology studies at the Leibniz Universität Hannover is divided into an six-semester bachelor- and a four-semester master's program:

Bachelor of Science

In six-semester Bachelor's degree program, the mathematical and physical fundamentals are conveyed, as well as the wide range of Meteorology. Here are original topics such as weather analysis and forecasting as well part of studying as modern measuring methods or the development of numerical models. The interaction of atmosphere and vegetation as well as the confrontation of the current debate on climate change are also only a small part of the diverse offerings. The program completes with a Bachelor thesis in working volume of 3 months. The Bachelor's degree allows a subsequent master program studies in meteorology or a related field, as well as entry into the profession, for example, the German Weather Service. Every year in September the Leibniz Universität Hannover organized the university information days on two days. Here you have the opportunity to visit us at our information center and to speak directly to meteorology students, or to learn in a lecture more details on meteorology studies.

Master of Science

The program is aimed at prospective students who already have a bachelor's degree in meteorology or a closely related subject. The four-semester master's degree program builds on the basic knowledge acquired in the Bachelor degree program, allowing a personal profile form on one of the research areas offered. The independent, critical analysis of meteorological topics, as well as the presentation and critical discussion of scientific results form an important focus. The Master's degree allows entry into employment or a subsequent doctoral studies. In the first two semesters, students get to know all areas of research in seminars and the working groups of the institute.

In the advanced internship, students have the opportunity to participate at a field measurement campaign, closely to their research, to plan this in advance together with the lecturers, as well as evaluate the measurement results with respect to the pre-determined questions using scientific methods. A major part of the courses is selectable the Master's program, being here lectures and internships in the fields of numerical weather prediction, contaminants, agricultural meteorology, atmospheric convection and turbulence or simulation of turbulent flows are available. In the 3rd and 4th semester a research topic is edited and the Master Program completed with the issuing thesis as part of the research phase. The admission requirement is in addition to an academic degree in meteorology or a closely related subject a minimum grade of 3.0. Whether a degree program is to be regarded as closely related is checked individually when applying. We recommend in this case, before applying an inquiry to us. A degree program should have mathematically-physically oriented and if possible already include meteorological aspects, for example, as to be classified in closely related minor subjects (e.g., Bachelor physics with a minor in meteorology) as to be classified closely related to. Usually it can be expected in fields other than meteorology that applications expected with requirements that must be met within the first year in the master's program. The level of constraint imposed is highly dependent on the individual case.
