Measured data at the institute
There are two measuring fields at the Institute of Meteorology und Climatology.
One measuring field is at the area of the institute at Herrenhäuser Strasse. There you can see also the 50m high measuring mast, constructed for thermic flow measurements. At the top of this mast there is an ultrasonic anemometer which measures velocity and direction of wind. Near by the mast temperature, humidity, pressure, wind velocity at 10 m and precipitation is measured. The measuring field does not fulfil the requirements of the world meterologic organization (WMO) for reference stations. Therefore the measured data are just an example for a station in urban surroundings and for educational use.
The second measuring field is at the area of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Ruthe near Sarsted. This area nearly fulfils all requirements of the WMO concerning the surroundings of a reference station. Temperature, humidity, precipitation and wind is measured there.
There are three camera systems collecting pictures of the the upper hemisphere.
- One webcam is orientated westward. The pictures of the last 24 hours day is stored. The pictures are less distorted, but onl a small detail of the upper hemisphere can bee seen.
- Two webcams with a ultra wide lens collect nearly the whole upper hemispere, but due to the large angle of view distortions are not neglectable. A good overwiev about the current weather situation is gathered.
- A camera with a fisheye optics (allsky camera) can collect the whole upper hemisphere with one picture. Due to the extreme short focal length the pictures are distorted much, but it is an excellent measuring system for cloud classification and radiation measurements.
The data from the station in Herrenhausen are used to collect climate diagrams. As mentioned before the station does not perform as a climate reference station. Therefore this data can only show the situation in urban location. Since 1952 the surroundings of the station have changed much so we can assume that the microclimate of the station has changed, too. Although this fact, the difference of yearly medium temperature has not changed much related to the values of the DWD station in Hannover-Langenhagen.
