Assessing the impact of halogens on the chemistry of the troposphere: A 3-D global chemical transport model interpretation of new field observations

Recent aircraft observations reveal high concentrations of inorganic bromine and iodine in the tropical free troposphere. We interpret these observations using a new halogen chemical mechanism implemented in the GEOS-Chem 3-D chemical transport model. We find that ozone driven oxidation of bromide on ice cloud droplets and aerosols in the upper troposphere is crucial for maintaining high observed levels of BrO. The high levels of inorganic halogens in free troposphere have implications for tropospheric ozone and NOx (critical air pollutants) and the oxidative capacity of the troposphere.
