Welcome to the Institute of Meteorology and Climatology

Over the past few decades technological innovations have developed rapidly, solving some of our society's problems. Nevertheless we continue to be strongly dependent on weather and climate conditions. The weather, climate and the environment have a strong impact on agricultural production, drinkable water supply, the generation of renewable energy and air traffic safety.

Global problems such as the green house effect and climate change, the ozone hole and stronger UV-exposure as well as increasing air pollution have become one of the main concerns of the general public. These problems can only be tackled at an interdisciplinary level, meteorology being the leading discipline in this context.

The Institute of Meteorology and Climatology of the Leibniz University of Hannover is the only one in the federal state of Lower Saxony. It offers education for students majoring in meteorology. Additionally many opportunities are provided for those who would like to study meteorology as a minor subject.
Research work is carried out by five working groups dealing with topics such as the weather, climate and the environment investigating problems related to atmospheric physics and applied meteorology.
As a partner and contact point for public authorities and the private sector our institute performs important tasks for the federal state of Lower Saxony, Germany, at the European level as well as for international organisations. These public authorities are inter alia the German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD), the Federal Air Transport Authority (Luftfahrtbundesamt), the EU-Commission, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and German Air Traffic Control (Deutsche Flugsicherung). For the public sector Lufthansa, Dornier and the Volkswagen Group are to be mentioned.
Moreover we are committed to PR activities and adult education.
On average, including all graduands and research assistants, our institute has 50 members of staff.
